Definition

A cotransporter is a type of membrane transport protein that facilitates transport across a biological membrane of two entities (ions or molecules) in a coupled fashion: it moves one entity in one direction (outside to inside) and the other entity in the other direction (inside to outside). One of the entities being transported is along its concentration gradient and the other is against its concentration gradient.
