Definition

Programmed cell death (abbreviated PCD) refers to the death or destruction of a cell carried out (or mediated) by an intracellular program.

There are three types of programmed cell death:

  • Type I cell death, called apoptosis
  • Type II cell death, called autophagy
  • Type III cell death, called necrotic cell death
