Definition

A chromosome is an organized collection of DNA present in an organism's cell, along with some chromosome proteins that play a regulatory role.

In eukaryotic cells, chromosomes have a global rod-like shape and usually occur in pairs (with the number of pairs of chromosomes dependent on the organism) whereas in prokaryotic cells, there is a single chromosome per cell and it is arranged in a circular fashion.
