Definition

The term primary cell is used for a cell that has recently been removed from its in vivo occurrence in a multicellular organism, and is being maintained in an ex vivo culture that is life-like and allows it to continue to carry out cellular functions. The practice of culturing primary cells is termed primary cell culture and the practice of culturing entire tissues of primary cells is termed primary tissue culture.
