Definition

The red blood cell, also called erythrocyte or RBC, is a type of blood cell found in vertebrates. The chief function of this cell, which is carried in the blood, is to circulate oxygen to the organism's entire body.

The red blood cells of mammals (see mammalian red blood cell) differ from those of those vertebrates (and from animal cells in general) in the following important respects: mammalian red blood cells do not have a nucleus and do not have any mitochondria.
