Definition

A biological membrane (or biomembrane) is a thin layer enclosing a biological entity (such as a cell or a cellular organelle) on all sides. Biological membranes comprise a defining ingredient::lipid bilayer (a layer that is two molecules thick) along with some embedded proteins, called the defining ingredient::integral membrane proteins.
