Definition

A biological membrane (or biomembrane) is a thin layer enclosing a biological entity (such as a cell or a cellular organelle) on all sides. Biological membranes comprise a lipid bilayer (a layer that is two molecules thick) along with some embedded proteins, called the integral membrane proteins.
