Definition

Compartmentalization refers to the evolutionary process by which cells have developed organelles, spatially distinct cellular components that perform different functions and hence increase the efficiency of cellular metabolism.

While all cells have some degree of compartmentalization, this is found to a greater extent in eukaryotic cells (that have membrane-bound organelles) than in prokaryotic cells (where the organelles are not membrane-bound and clearly separated).
