Definition
The term metabolic pathway is used to refer to a series of chemical reactions occurring within the cell of a living organism. Typically, it refers to reactions controlled and regulated by the cell, with enzymes used for catalysis.
The end products of a metabolic pathway may be used in either of three ways:
- Immediate use for cellular functions
- Input to another metabolic pathway
- Storage for later use
