Definition
Mitochondrial carriers are a solute carrier family comprising 53 mitochondrial transport proteins. The proteins in this family specialize in the transport of materials across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Note that the inner mitochondrial membrane allows free passage only for water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, so transport proteins are needed for everything else; the outer mitochondrial membrane freely allows small molecules so transport proteins are generally not needed.
The solute carrier family index is 25, and there is only one subfamily (A), so the individual proteins in the mitochondrial carrier family are referred to using the nomenclature SLC25A followed by a number from 1 to 53.
Each mitochondrial carrier protein corresponds to a gene that encodes it; that gene also has the same SLC name (for instance, the gene that encodes the SLC25A1 protein is called the SLC25A1 gene).
