Definition

The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance that pervades the part of the cell on the inside of the cell membrane and holds all the cell's organelles (with the exception of the nucleus in eukaryotic cells, whose gel substance is termed the nucleoplasm).

Summary

Item Value
Type of organisms whose cells contain cytoplasm All
Type of cells within the organisms that contain cytoplasm All
Structural components cytosol (the gel part, both freely floating and in some of the organelles), organelles (other than the nucleus in eukaryotic cells), and cytoplasmic inclusions
Chemical constituents Basically everything. In particular, lots of proteins
Function It is the home of all cellular activity
